Vitamin D

I can’t talk about calcium without talking about vitamin D, since it’s vital for your body’s absorption of calcium. Without it, your body can’t use much of the calcium that you’re consuming. There are two types of vitamin D: D2, which is used to fortify foods, and D3, which your body produces when exposed to the ultraviolet rays from the sun and is also found in some animal foods such as oily fish.

No matter how varied your diet is, you can never get as much vitamin D from food as you can from good old sunshine, since those glorious UVB rays convert a compound in your skin (called 7-dehydrocholesterol) into vitamin D3.. Remember, UVB rays are at their strongest when the sun is directly above you (when your shadow is at its shortest), so that’s the best time to get out and about. This is usually around lunchtime.
